I had a 92 16V GTI (not a GLI, but close enough) -- great car! I bought it used with 25,000 miles and then traded it at 104,000 miles in when I got my 98 GLX. Reliability was very good, only major repairs were the clutch, power steering pump, and timing belt -- all pretty standard stuff.
Build quality was pretty good -- lots of rattle, but it had a pretty tight stock suspension. Handled great, looked great yada yada yada ...
Overall, a thumbs up!

I've often thought about getting a 16V GLI as a second car because I can't
afford another VR6 car. My wife usually drive the GLX because our other
vehicle is a 3/4 truck used to tow my race car with. I would feel like a
pig if I made her drive the truck every day, but I don't really like driving
it all the time either.
I'd be interested to hear about what you think of the GLI overall
(performance, reliability, build quality, etc.). Road conditions are not as
much of an issue in my part of the country.
