Thanks for the excellent information about control chip replacement.
You really cleared some issues up for me.  Considering I just bought
the car, and that it's only the GL (why am I on the GLX list?  well,
it's still a jetta), I don't think chip replacement is for me - or that
it'll benefit me with the dinky (comparatively) 4-cyl.

appreciate the info though!

Question for everyone: would you or others be interested if I set up a
listserver for watercooled VWs in general ... ie. jetta, golf, passat,
new beetle, blah)?  We have the jettaglx & the GTI-VR6 lists.  There
doesn't seem to be one for 'all-things-VW'.  I could set one up easily
enough; would there be interest?
