IN O2 display question

Allo again.
   This is just a quickie. When I turn my '95 GLX on, the odometer display
reads "IN O2" while the starter is throwing the cylendars around. Once the
car is on (i.e., the key is no longer all the way forwards, and it's
running under its own power), the display goes back to showing the 
mileage.
   Is this supposed to happen?
   Car has 50k miles, only mod is a slight airbox mod. It's done this 
since
I bought the car (month ago).
