off-topic--quick h*lp w/ used A2

Hey guys, a friend of mine is lloking for a car -- a Volvo 240 or a VW
GTI/Golf/Jetta in the range of 3-4 thousand dollars.  He needs one FAST
(otherwise he will end up with his parents' 170000mi Oldsmobile), so I
am looking for one.  Right now, his '84 Mazda GLC in on its last miles.

What advice can anyone give me for possible problems in A2 cars.  Right
now I've found an 89 Wolfsburg GLI w/ high miles, and a few Jetta GLs.
