I have got a Thule rack and used it all summer.  I cleaned up the roof 
pretty well and put it on. I left it on most of the summer and have not 
seen any damage yet.  I would leave it on as much as possible, make sure 
things are clean, and there should be no problems.  Sure beats shlepping 
your bike around in the back of the car.

Oh, also, the locks that come on them are ok but don't expect to keep a 
theif from getting your bike.  When I got mine I didn't get the keys in 
the same shipment, and was able to pick all the locks (6) in about 2 
minutes.
