gasolines, octanes, the corporate image

more on the subject of gasoline.
the owners manual states 87 octane is good for our cars.
('98 GLX) is there anything to gain by using a higher
octane? performance? milage?

who's using what octanes and why?
i'm using 87 (well i've had to fill it twice so far) in my GLX
and am wondering if i'm missing out on anything. also-
isn't it bad to keep switching octanes? how about brand
names? i've always used texaco. in the past it was because
of my texaco card and wanting to pay only ONE gas bill
every month. but since i use my VISA for everything now
(one bill for EVERYTHING is nice) it doesn't really matter.
