My 98 Passat has the tiptronic transmission. It certainly gives more 
control than any other automatic I've ever driven. In fact, I'd say one 
feels more power than many other autos. However, it still doesn't perform 
like a manual transmission. The torque converter still robs power. Also, 
even in tip mode, the transmission will kick down if you really punch the 
accelerator.

This isn't to say the tip isn't a fine transmission. It is. I'd say it's 
a nice compromise between both worlds. Not as much performance, but 
convenient when the freeway is crawling at 10 mph.
