I am trying to use my VW Visa card to maximum these days as well.  NOt
that I know that it will REALLY work one day, but I can't resist :-)

Just like suggested later in your message, I am using it as a checking
account.  Just about everything (except for rent :-(   can be charged
these days.

Note that our VW Visa cards have an annual and a total limit for use! 
You can earn 700 points (equivalent to $$$) PER YEAR, with a total of
3,500 points in a five year period.  Considering that 5% of your
purchases (not credit tranfers, not cash advances) goes towards that
total, it means that you have to spend $14,000 per year to take full
advantage of the card.

Well, if this works, you may be able to rack up some autopoints quickly. 
But, remember that the max for year is $700 and you want to buy your
car in March of 1998.
