Strange "whirring" sound

I know this may be a longshot, but-

When the tach needle hits somewhere between 2000 and 2200 rpm, I hear a   
strange "whirring" or "howling" sound from the engine. I've noticed it   
ever since I got the car, and now it's beginning to annoy the hell out of   
me. Is there anyone else who is experiencing this same problem, or am I   
just hearing things? Any suggestions as to what this may be? I have a   
stock '97 GLX.
