Just about anything is better than the stock GA's. For you in Les
Schawb country, checkout the latest Falken's for about $400
installed (someone else here recommended) or the Toyo FZ4
which I bought on sale for about $485 installed. Both tires
have a 300 tread wear just as the GA's and suppose to have
good wet/dry handling. The Toyo's I'm told are to have a
better and quieter ride, overall better quality tire. My
wet handling is good, the GA's are scary at speed and dry
handling is better than GA's. I have no experience with other tires
for this car but Toyo's. I had Toyo's on my 83' GTI(165k miles) that
were as good or better than any other 20k mile tire I tried. Charlie
( can't remember his last name) who use to race VW's from his wheel
chair said," They were like iron and handle as good as anything I've
put on."
If cost and wear is no object, try the top of the line Toyo's
which was well reviewed in a past EC.
