I paid $20k (sticker was $25.8k) for my 93 Corrado, brandnew.

My complete investment in the engine is a bit over $6k. That includes 
Schrick 
Manifold purchased used for $1500, Schrick cams new for $600, Genie 
header used for $500, 3.0l lower end cost about $3k fully built, ported 
the head myself, misc little things make up the rest. I still have to 
dyno, but expect 220hp or so.

Add wheels/tires/suspension, oil cooler, Recaro's etc etc and the cost goes 
above $30k total. It will nip at my brothers $42k 97 3.2l M3 w/o a 
problem.
