Re: Clutch Prob (Long, but please read)
they will give you a loner when you pay for the rental! they never
gave me a loaner during all the work they did on my lemon. If they
say specifically that they will give you a loaner, free of charge,
then give them a try, otherwise go to Sunnyvale VW and just rent a car
for $20, it will be worth you while. I went to Carlson because it was
convient to my work also, but it became NOT SO CONVIENT the 6th and
7th time I had to return to have the same problem worked on.
Here is a copy of the message I sent to some one else discribing my
rough idle problem and all the hassel with Carlson. Maybe you will
reconsider. Oh, and also I too had a problem with my transmition in
my GLX, grinding from 1st to 2nd, took it to Carlson and they told me
nothing was wrong "unable to reproduce at this time" So after awhile
when the problem was still there I took it to Sunnyvale VW and as it
turns out I needed new snycros 1, 2, new gear hubs 1,2,3,and a new 2
gear, and all the the seals excetera. Carlson was just unwilling to
lift a finger and look in the transmition. They don't listen to there
customers and their shop doesn't have the latest in equipment.
Sunnyvale does have the most advanced VW equipment on the Peninsula,
Carlson knows it, and Carlson is too busy with it's nose up the ass of
Porsche owners to care about us and our VW's. Sorry for all the
ranting but I have had it with Carlson, and I even bought my car
there.
OLD story please read.
Hi my name is andy and I hope I can help you. I had a similar problem
with my VR6 Jetta. It would idle rough at stops but only
intermitantly, my gas milage went down, and later on I noticed things
like my lights diming when I would step on the breaks. Also the car
would fail to start on the first 2 key turns occasionally. This
problem started at about 29,000 miles, I had the 30,000 tune up and
thought that it would be fixed (plugs?). It didn't. What followed
was 7 trips back to the same dealer to try and fix the problem. Most
of the time they would fix nothing, or say "unable to reproduce at
this time" or they would replace a part that they though it could be
but it wasn't. Here's what they checeked etc. The replace the
ignition wires ( they are known to arc if they are the old ones ie.
black, new ones are red) they checked the O2 sensor, EGR valve (both
know to go bad) They replaced the B+ harness, (known to short and
fail in earily VR6), they reset the ECU to basic settings. They
checked the alternator, and battery, and all the grounding connections
to the motor. During each of these trips they would chec the OBD
computer a "1551" as they call it, and find no error codes. They
tired to blame it on the performance chip I had in the car, wrong, I
took it out and it still had the problem, they tried to blame the K&N
air filter I had, wrong, I removed it and there was still the problem.
They final clue(found by Sunnyvale VW) was that a protion of the B+
harness was showing a 1 volt drop from the battery to the ECU from
13.5v to 12.5v. This was the problem. One of the connections to the
battery had become corroded and was building up resistence.
Apparently it had been crimped on poorly, causing some arcing, causing
corrosion, causing heat, melting the wire cover and causing resistence
and the voltage drop. This caused the ECU to recieve wrong
information and essentially de-tune the car, (gas milage prob) and
cause the rough idle, cause incorrect voltage to power the lights,
charge the battery etc. All these problems, 3 months of greif, 8
trips to the dealer, and numerous unneeded repairs, money etc (car is
out of warranty) just for one bad connection that was over looked and
didn't trip an error code in the computer. However now my car is
running correctly, my milage is up, performance etc. Don't let them
give up! The VR6 is known for being a smooth engine that's way you
payed for a 6 cylinder. Don't let them be fooled just becuase it
doesn't trip an error code. I had times when I thought I was just
being too picky and feeling a rough idle that wasn't there but IT WAS.
I don't know where you are located but I am in the San Francisco Bay
area and I would recommend Sunnyvale VW.
Good Luck
andy
PS if the dealer you go to is not accomidating, do not hessitate to
call VW customer care and make a complaint, and set up an appointment
with a factory rep. and your dealer.
Andy

Well, I gave Sunnyvale a call. They said if I had it in there Monday
morning by 7:45 they'd be able at least to do my service, and take a look
at the clutch. They have a "delivery service" that can get me to work,
but no way to get me home. Carlsen seemed to indicate that they would
be able to give me a loaner if they needed to keep my car. But as a
consultant, I don't have the same leeway a regular employee has to say "Oh
I'll be late today, my car is getting worked on."
