The doors should not be completely flush with the body.  This is 
especialy true for the rears.  When the doors  are flush, the air and 
debris (ie. sand) flowing across them will actually remove paint from 
the body just after the doors.  You may notice on some older VWs that 
there is no paint left in these areas.  By having the doors just at a 
slight angle, the debris will be directed away from these areas, and 
not damage the paint.  My father actually had this happen to his 86 
Jetta.
