It is true that a K&N cone style filter can cause a power loss because of the
warm air it pulls in, but the factory air box also pulls in warm air. There
is a hinged rubber door on the side of the air box that faces the engine.
Under hard acceleration, it opens up.
There are a few remedies for the warm air problem caused by the cone style
filter. One is to add a cool air intake by mounting a hose behind the grill
and having it blow directly onto the filter. In a documented test on
aftermarket filters in Max Power Magazine on a Ford Cosworth, a 15 hp gain was
achieved but such a setup over the stock filter box. Another way to solve the
problem is to mount the filter behind the bumper, away from the engine. Such
tubing systems are used for K&N setups on Honda's, and EIP Tuning offers such
a setup for the VR6 Turbo. As long as the filter is mounted in a way that it
can get cold air, significant power gains are possible.

P.S. If you ever get a chance, go for a ride in a VR6 Turbo, its a trip. You
will cut the check instantly if you have the money (and maybe even if you
don't).
