-----------------Clipped from previous mail-----------------
factory airbox with a few mods, removal of the large particle screen
and the upper snorkel and put in an ABT free flowing air filter (a
blue and yellow K&N basically). If you are also figuring out how to
remove the top snorkel inside the air box (it's purpose is to reduce
noise, with out it things are really not much noisier) heat it with a
hair dryer, spray WD40 between it and the sleeve it sits in, perhaps
run a small screw driver between the two and then push it out from the
inside out, if you have trouble heat more with the blow drier.(plastic
expands when hot). Good luck.

---------------------------
The air box mods and and filter install are detailed in the first
European Car article for Project Jetta GLX. I will try to describe
it, if you can't find it I am willing to Xerox it and Fax it to you if
you are interested.
1. Remove the top of the air box, as if changing air filter. First
remove small hose leading to front of the air box (front left engine
compartment as facing car) the hose runs from the airbox to the crank
case breather, there is a hose clamp, just remove it from the air box
end.
2. remove clips holding air intake hose, that houses the airmass flow
meter, the one with the wires and plug attatched to it, and remove it
from it's attatchment to the air box, (two clips one on top, one in
the back you can't usually see, feel for it)
3.Then ther are two more clips that hold the airbox shut, they are on
the right side of the air box in the front and back, pop them undone
and now the top of the airbox should come up from the right, the left
side doesn't have clips it just slips under two retaing latches, the
top should come out.
4. You will now be looking at the airfilter sitting in the bottom
portion of the airbox it is ususally orange around the edges and
yellowish paper in the middle, just pull it out and put to the side
(save it you will need it when the K&N is being clean later on).
5. In the lower portion you will see a bulged metal wire screen,
remove the two screws on either side and remove the screen, it is not
really necessary and usually gets clogged with junk and restricts
flow. (airbox mod #1 complete)
6. remove the snorkel from the top portion of the air box. looking a
the top half you will see a pipe that comes in the back and goes
across the box before opening, this causes a baffeling effect and
reduces engine noise from the air intake, however it increases air
flow resistence. Remove it,the noise difference is negligible. see
above previous description for tips on removal of this pipe. (you have
now completed the air box mods!)
7. Now install your new K&N type filter element and reinstall the top
portion of the air box including all clips etc. and re-atatch the hose
form the crank case breather to the outside of the box. Installation
is reverse of removal.
the K&N air filter can be purchased at most performance automotive
stores (super shops etc.) and most places in European car advertise
them, I prefer New Dimensions. However! They are $45 bucks plus
shipping. I have found that Velocity Sport Tuning is selling the ABT
copy of the K&N air filter for $34.95 plus shipping (quanties are
limited) It is the same as the K&N except for color differences,
(that you wont see anyway) The filter is washable and you can use the
K&N filter cleanerkit on it just as if it were a K&N. These filters
last forever, just wash every 30K, or if you live in a dusty, sandy
area, as needed.
Good luck, feel free to ask anymore questions.

Thanks for the clarification. While you are at it, can you give me more info
(parts and est. cost) on the K&N filter modifications?
Thanks,
Jay
