That's somewhat of a misconception. While the Kenyans certainly have enjoyed 
marathon success in the past -- and it is well chronicled the benefits of 
their high altitude training -- Ethiopia,  Mexico, and Japan have also produced 
some pretty amazing distance runners of late. Just not in the sheer raw numbers 
of Kenya. 

Kenya has a heritage or legacy in terms of distance running, almost a 
birthright just as basketball is the birthright of American players but the rest of 
the world is catching up so too in distance running is the rest of the world 
catching up with the Kenyan runners
