I have to say I agree with you completely.  High lottery picks
are the lifeblood of a franchise, as I've argued many times.  Not
a single team has won the championship in the last twenty years
without a top-three pick headlining.  Even the Celtics are misleading.
The Celts had the number 1 pick overall, which is why they were
able to fleece golden state of McHale and Parish.

Still, I do think that Pierce is the kind of player you would usually
only get with a top three pick.  He's better than many recent #1 overalls,
and if you can combine him with a deep roster of tough, talented,
and cohesive players, you might be able to compete for a title -- esp.
if you can get a Kirilenko somehow.  That's the best face I can put on
the situation.  I don't think in today's NBA you need two hall-of-famers.
