If you want the answer to why this situation exists, ask Bill
Cartwright, who benched Chandler, Crawford and Rose.
O'Brien learned from the Pitino experience, that you keep your job in
this league, by catering to your stars.
Pierce wants the ball in his hands, but isn't a great ball handler or
passer. Pierce doesn't want to run; thereby, O'Brien, with the best of
intentions, who knows exactly what's wrong, has had to modify his early
season plans and is resigned to mild comments after the game, like "
they need to move." Paul Silas, who imho, would have been the best
choice to come in here and coach, has taken on a bench player and now
one of his stars, early in the teams development. Hopefully he gets the
whole teams attention. I'm sure he has no intention of coaching a team
who won't; defend, rebound, play fundamental basketball, or face the
coach, when he is talking. I expect, though, that even Silas, knows
enough, not to try and take on LeBron.
Larry Brown knew that Allen Iverson was not playing properly. Doc
Rivers knew the same about Tracy McGrady. It's endemic.
What can be done about this? Very little. It's the players and their
star aura that sells tickets and accessories. Perhaps, we can say;
patience and a soft but firm hand. Someone and it won't be O'Brien,
does need to set Pierce aside, not to "have his butt chewed out," but
to show him some film of the great Celtic teams and Laker teams and
infuse in him a desire to run and move in the half court, be unselfish
to a fault and let a point guard run the offense. At the same time
though, I think it would be more than fair for Paul to insist that the
settee go out and get the team a real point guard.
O'Brien can be blamed. It usually is the coach, but there are more
sticky fingers in this pie than you suggest.
