Hunter, McCarty, Batiste and Baker

2. On Hunter... Can't remember exactly what he said, but it struck me as
lukewarm. I was surprised, because Hunter was playing so well-of course, my
assumption is they've already decided he won't make the roster and Ainge is
going out of his way not to build the guy up. He did say that he believed
Hunter was outplaying Sweetney, which he was.

I assume the same thing -- that the C's have made ups their minds that Hunter won't make the team. But Why?!? Why waste a pick on an american player who you have made up your mind you won't invite to camp (and thus loose his rights), like we did with Songalia, instead of taking a flyer on an international player who you don't have to "worry" about coming over?

I just don't understand the thought process: The GM is correct in pointing out #56 pick is outplaying the #9 pick (who we might have had eyes for in a NY trade) but we'd rather have McCarty and his non-rebounding self?

The thing that bothers me the most about the McCarty thing is that we're bidding against ourselves again -- like we used to with ML (see: Minor) and Pitino (see: everyone). If Orlando wants to sign McCarty to a 3 year, $4 mil contract that's their problem. What really would we lose w/ Walter gone?

Where did this Batiste rumor come from? He had a decent year with Memphis as an undrafted rookie, but I can't imagine what he really brings that Hunter couldn't (at less money). He's similarly "undersized" and probably not as hungry since he'll land somewhere if not the C's.

p.s. Assuming we can't get Baker to retire, I wonder if having a younger-Payton clone in Banks, could set him up for 8-12 pts a night with passes like we saw Kedrick & Hunter getting last night. That would assume Baker can catch the ball still, but stranger things have happened. Count me in the camp that hopes Baker makes a miraculous pheonix-rebirth type comeback. What's the alternative? Hope that he just sits on our cap for 3 years, ugh. If he's on the team I at least want some production out of him.
