Re: [Celtics' Stuff ] Stoudemire proves his stupidity in bunches.

There's a solution to that. The bench. They may not be able to fine a player, or suspend him. But there's absolutely no requirement that a Coach can't glue the offender's bottom to the pine for a few weeks. Some player contracts have incentives that can only be achieved with playing time. That's tough to get if you've pissed off the people who decide who gets to be on the court.

Also, it means that when that contract is up, said player won't be getting any generous offers. Granted, this only works if everyone is consistent. For example, when Spree committed attempted murder, it would have been a clear message if no other team would take him because of his antics. The problem is, there's always some team--in that case, New York--willing to deal with the devil to maybe win a few games. Of course, fittingly, since Spree went to the Knicks, they've been a horrible team.

In the meantime, the player's union has to draw a reasonable line between protecting their members from unfair tactics and letting the punishment literally fit the crime. I just read another article where Damon Stoudemire apparently admitted that the grass was, in fact, his. He does, as mentioned, have two previous drug possession charges against him--and the authorities are considering longer jail time as this is a violation of his probation. Whoever is in charge of the Blazers needs to either fire him, or bench him until he realizes he will NEVER play another game for Portland unless and until he cleans up his act. He's had several chances already. It's high time he dealt with the results of his own stupidity. If nothing else, maybe some kid will wake up and smell the roses instead of the grass.

It ain't that simple Snoop. The players union and their lawyers will continue to hardball these issues every time they have a Collective Bargaining Session - meaning low threshold fines and suspensions. The expectation (and perhaps rightfully so, but that is another debate) is that these matters should be handled in a civilian court (through which the laws are upheld in any society).

Carlisimo SHOULD have pressed charges and not dropped them after Spreewell choked him. That would've helped. Roy Tarpley ended up in jail. If Stoudamire were in a 3 strikes state (California for example) he'd also be facing mandatory jail time even for misdemeanor (instead of felony, which usually is intent to distribute) possession as I believe he's been busted two other times.

As long as there is a powerful players union they'll have the leverage in the contract side of the house, but until we "juries of peers" convict these stars (whatever their ilk - TV, movie or sports) the only people we have to blame are ourselves.
