You are absolutely right there!
I'm just glad that for once the front office rhetoric on
a benchwarmer ("best man defender on the team") actually
comes anywhere close to approximating reality.
As for the Baker trade, it brought everything to a
screeching halt. Its nothing less than self-imposed
salary cap jail.
Epstein (Red Sox) said something about how baseball
trades should have a 51% probability of panning out, or
something to that effect. Its staggering to me that Chris
Wallace could not weigh the downside financial risk on
Vin Baker at anything less than 50%. A rule of thumb is
that if you wouldn't be willing to sign a 30-year-old FA
on your roster to a 55 million dollar longterm deal, then
there is no justification either to add one to your
roster by trade. And this wasn't a Rashard Lewis or Elton
Brand type of dilemma/decision...this was Vin Baker.
I guess you could say the above paragraph is me failing
to practice what I preach (to stop carping about the
past).
Let's just say that this was the one clear fireable
offense above and beyond the rest. Obie was against it,
the numbers were lunatic, and Chris Wallace was alone
among his peers in bidding for Vin's services. He handed
the new owners a 55 million dollar bill for a guy who
brings "some punch" and other nice refreshments to the
games. Thank goodness he has Steve Bulpuppet in his
corner.
