East vs West Parity Returns

            A year ago, a geographic transformation of major proportions 
took place in pro basketball.  Once the new rules came into play, a gang of 
fast-scoring, high-octane teams turned the Western Conference into the 
NBA's dominant unit.  LED BY THE LIKES of Sacramento and Dallas, western 
dominance became a fact of life as several teams rose up to challenge the 
Lakers.  This year, though, the geographical story line involves a 
continental shift back to the east.  After spending a couple of years on 
the deck, the Eastern Conference seems to have finally recovered from the 
decline of such premiere centers as Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo and Rick 
Smits.
