I admire Charles Barkley, and especially loved him as a
player, but I think he is overrated in his current job.
He does zero homework or research (which annoys me),
rarely contributes insights about basketball (which
surprises me), and his overall half-ass approach to his
job leads him to make asinine and self-indulgent ad lib
comments of no value.
I think he's living off everyone's expectation/assumption
that he is a truly interesting personage. We know he is
THE Charles Barkley, so he can't be that terrible on the
job.
In terms of overhyped and overrated, I'd rank him below
Dickie V (I can't help liking him, but he's an actual
buffoon).
Vitale's shtick may be shrill and annoying on occasion,
but at least he doesn't mail it in like Barkley has been
doing. And kids probably like Dickie V. He's so damn
enthusiastic and has a kind word about everyone and every
player.
The above is totally FWIW. You could probably care less
what I think about Charles Barkley!
Anyway, here are a couple of actual Celtics-related
thoughts.
One is that if NJ loses to Sacto again tonight, Boston
will have miraculously made up a lot of the ground we
gave up since the X-mas massacre. Boston could be just
four games off the race for the number one playoff seed,
as opposed to eating dust a week ago.
Second, Boston has to realize they were as lucky as they
were good in the past three fourth quarters. The Celtics
can't keep turning it on and off like they've been doing.
We got a reprieve against Philly, but we need to play
much better and harder to keep winning.
Wednesday's opponent, Milwaukee, is one of the stronger
road teams (9-12) and they seem to have the revenge-
minded Paul Pierce's number so far this year.
Another thing to note is that the Bucks are just 1.5
games behind nose-diving Philly for a playoff seed. Let's
keep things that way, if we are interested in getting
Philly's pick in the draft.
Lastly, in case others haven't mentioned it (I didn't yet
read every weekend post) the Celtic have just reached the
official halfway mark of the NBA season.
Through 41 games, Boston has 24 wins (thus a 48-win pace
on paper). We are also 5-5 in January.
Yesterday, I was mistaken in writing that Boston has not
had a losing month all year. In fact, they were 0-2 in
October.
But a +.500 month of January would make it three straight
winning months, a mark of consistency. It may surprise
some people, but Boston was actually above .500 in
December (9-7) despite losing all four Wednesday night
games (we're 2-0 so far this month).
Let's hope to see a complete 48-minute effort against
Milwaukee and a clean win over George Karl. Remember that
we finish the month next week with two tough games
against Detroit, and that Boston's game this Friday is
against the #2 scoring defense in the NBA I believe, even
though it is the lotto-bound Chicken McNuggets.
