re: Where's Vin

Brent "Ain't He Dead, Yet?" Musberger mentioned that Obie told ESPN before the game that, because Vinnie matched up so terribly against Dirk, that he wouldn't play. There was speculation that this meant only while Dirk was actually *in* the game, but of course it was proved that merely having Dirk in the building meant Vinnie shouldn't bother suiting up.
But wait...Dirk plays forward, while Baker plays center for us, which means he'd responsible for Bradley or Lafrentz (insofar as any player is responsible for his man in Harter's defense). Moreover, it's not like Walker or Battie could stay with Dirk either. Walker's too short, and Battie, for all his mobility as a center, can't really chase small forwards all over the court, even if they're 7 feet tall. The only one who even has a chance is Waltuh. This smells really fishy. Has Vinnie been acting up already?

Anyway, it doesn't matter for this game. The Celtics pretended to play defense, pretended to rebound and were resigned to a blowout from the very beginning. The Mavs quickly unmasked their act and the only question about this game was how soon the free chalupas would come. This looked like one of those games late in the Pitino regime.

PS Given the extended garbage time tonight, I just couldn't stop marvelling at the fine job Dumb & Dumber have done rounding out this team. Guys like the Top-5 pick Sundog, who can shoot the lights out in warmups but can't hit the broad side of a barn in an NBA game, even during a blowout, even though very few guys can even come close to challenging his shot. And that's his best and apparently only skill. Guys like Bremer, whose only NBA-quality skill seems being able to bench twice his body weight (Wallace probably thought, "gee, Shaq couldn't bench twice his body weight - let's sign this monster before the NFL grabs him!") . And Wallace's piece d'resistance of the draft - Kedrick, who, except for the occasional lob dunk, still looks completely lost on offense, even during garbage time. Append the Appendix Man and Mikki to this group, and this collection would lose to Lebron's HS team. Obie had to play Walker an additional 20 minutes after it was over, just so that they would avoid setting the NBA record for the biggest margin of defeat.
