Re: Re: Vecsey on Ainge and the Celts (including what Ainge allegedly offered for Bonzi)

I do think that Ainge's moves have two purposes - 1. improve the talent level;
and 2. Force Obie's hand in changing the style of play. You get rid of some of
his crutches - EWill and Battie... James to a lesser extent - and you force him
to change rotations and, hopefully, the offense (although I have trouble
believing he'd change anything; he has taken this new team and installed a
pretty close copy of last season's offense).

That begs the question:
What is easier - to teach an old dog new tricks, or just to get a new dog that
already knows those tricks? Danny's method - if that's what he's trying to do -
seems a very indirect way of trying to institute a new offense. It's one thing
to stick with Pierce while he's trying to figure how to play in the new
offense. True-blue superstars are not easy to replace. NBA coaches, while not
quite a dime a dozen, are two for a dollar compared to the likes of Pierce. If
your coach has major deficiencies, why not get another one?
What makes Obie so near-and-dear to the ownership's hearts? His sizable
extension? His relationship to EWill, Waltuh, and Blitzer Blount? Perceived
unavailability of an adequate replacement? What? (Egg, Wyc, anyone).
