posting
The fact is, that at this time of year, many people are keenly interested
in the Celtics--who they are, where they're going, and how they get
there. Since we are all individuals, we all have differing opinions. Some
are boundlessly enthusiastic, others cautiously wary, still others think
the C's have zero chance of going anywhere this year.
We all know that not everyone will be right. But we have the right to the
opinion. Yes, I personally think some more positive optimism for the
Celtics would be more enjoyable to read, but there's something to be said
for people who more readily see the flaws. It's one thing to discuss--even
debate, or outright argue--the differing points of view. But do some
people's definition of clever repartee have to include taking a broadside
at someone personally?
It's a well-known fact that in nearly every messageboard, newsgroup, etc.,
the majority of posting is done by a minority of people. Why? Because
some are more outgoing than others. Perhaps they'd rather listen to other
points of view and don't feel they have anything substantial to add--and
I've never been fond of oodles of "me, too" posts anyway.
But I fail to see how people are going to be encouraged to "de-lurk" when
they have been given reason to expect not only an attack on their posts,
but themselves as well. God knows, I've had a few shots taken at me over
time. Fortunately, as one friend put it to me, "You're too stubborn to
drop dead when people tell you to--whyever would you shut up at the same
urging?"
I'd prefer to see more posts actually concerning the team, rather than
personal attacks on listmembers. But then again, I also think that the
Anniversary of "Peanuts" should be a national Holiday.
Do I have a solution? No, not really. I can't make people do what I'd
like them to, and with Great Power comes Great Paperwork, anyway. I just
hope that the list as a whole--me included--takes a deep breath and thinks,
"Hey! The first preseason game is next Tuesday! I better lay in my supply
of game munchies and work on my prediction for Snoopy's site!" I would
think that might lead to a more positive outlook on things--unless you work
for ESPN, of course. (See my site for details).
have fun, have chocolate!
