I'll Take It

For those of you who didn't watch tonight's game.... if you're a fan of
NBA-level defense, you probably didn't want to. The McDyess-less,
Sprewell-less Knicks looked far better than they actually are at the
offensive end. Midway through the 4th quarter the announcers mentioned
that the Knicks were shooting 55% from the field. I haven't seen the
stats yet, but I suspect the Cs lost the war on the boards again.

Fortunately, the Knicks were as atrocious defensively as the Cs, and the
refs were actually pretty generous, so there was a near non-stop parade to
the foul line. Eric Williams scored 14 or so in the first quarter and
then stayed dormant for most of the rest of the game. Battie was being
guarded by Clarence Weatherspoon, yet for some reason no one looked for
him in "da bahx". Walker took a few boneheaded shots, but mostly had an
efficient game (18 points, at least 10 assists). Vin was active --
actually blocked a shot and clogged the middle somewhat effectively. And,
thank God, last season's Paul Pierce showed up during the second half. I
won't praise him too effusively - he did manage to turn a 2-on-1 break
into a dumbass offensive foul that had me screaming - but he was the
difference in the game. He was something like 22-23 from the foul line
and made a key block on Allan Houston (who finished with 39 points
himself) down the stretch.

The Cs have a long way to go, but it's nice to get that first win.

Michael Gooen

P.S. What are we to make of the fact that Hironaka didn't write a preview
but did attend tonight's game? Does this mean we have to steal his
computer but get him tickets?
