roll the dice

At this stage, every quoted NBA source and all the
Seattle papers are openly mocking Chris Wallace. I've
never before seen such league-wide head-scratching over a
trade.

That being the case, Chris Wallace has every right to
gloat if he turns out to be right (just don't blame
luxury cap constraints if he is wrong). Rarely is one
man's hunch so distinct from peer opinion.

He and Shira Springer are among the only people
supporting this deal. Even Obie sounds slightly sickened
by losing an ideal fit in Rodney Rogers, for an unknown
fit in Baker.

When all is said and done, its not a matter of whether
Baker can play....he's fat and has 9 years on his treads,
but he's not an Ike Austin or something.

Potentially he can be VERY good for a year, two years,
maybe even the life of his contract. His best years were
much better than Ike Austin's.

Count me as one fan who thinks a low post game ranks as
one of the most aesthetically fascinating things about
NBA basketball, right after great playmaking (point guard
or point forward).

In the perfect case scenario, we all know Vin Baker can
be great for the Boston Celtics...a top three center in
the East from the get go.

Its the whole range of downside risks involved that make
the trade so hard to defend. Let's just try to be
positive.

As for getting a draft pick (Seattle is a good bet to
fade in the standings), I say why bother? We won't re-
sign one anyway. And what's more clear than ever is that
Chris Wallace talks-the-talk about being patient, but
he's quick to jetison our 20-year-olds(in this case for
zero upside acquisitions like Tony Delk or, quite
possibly, Shammond Williams).

I guess you can justify it because our rookies turned out
to be "busts".

You wonder if other teams are just as eager to part with
Radmanovic, Rodney White, Sagana Diop, Troy Murphy,
Michael Bradley, Steven Hunter and all the other guys we
presumably "should have picked" in that draft range
rather than Joe, Kedrick and Joe. Oh yeah, but those
other guys are still young. There's a big difference,
don't you see?

Joe Johnson is actually tearing up the Summer circuit.
He's a talent. Kedrick Brown (luckily) joined Forte as
first team All Shaw. How fast do you think Wallace can
trade Kedrick for 30-year-old veteran bench help, if the
Celts start to struggle in February?

Joe H.
