RE: [Celtics' Stuff Omar Cook on the way?

Couldn't disagree more on what the Celtics need out of a point guard, Joe.
That's what we've been getting, but it's not what we need.

This team is the worst shooting team in the league. They take a lot of bad,
contested shots. A good point guard changes that, not by making a lot of
shots, but by setting up guys for higher-percentage shots. It's the Jason
Kidd/Stephon Marbury thing. Is Omar Cook that kind of point guard? Who
knows? But he's worth a shot. I think that is his game-creating and leading
a team. But is he good enough at it to survive. We'll see.

I think short of an impact big man, a creative, "true" point guard is this
team's biggest need. Kenny still has some of those instincts, when he's
allowed to use them. His stats in wins vs. losses are pretty striking. Omar
may be another in the long line of sucky Celtic backup point guards-Herren,
Damon Jones, Milt, Rick Brunson, Doug Overton, etc.-but he's worth a shot. I
think he kind of replaces that late first-rounder the Celts gave up in the
Phoenix trade. If he was in this draft and the Celts took him at 23 or so,
would we be complaining? Remember, Denver traded a first-round pick for him
after this last draft.

He's not ready now, but why not try to develop the guy? Maybe a year from
now he's showing signs of being a nice Tinsley/Parker type of guard.

Hi Lance, I hope Omah's not a Chris Herren type mismatch
where he'll be on the roster but won't really get a
tryout in the role of playmaker.

Boston doesn't *need* its PG to dribble all that much.
Get rid of the dribble and make sure you hit your open
jumpers. Or sit.

By that criteria, Omar may be sitting a lot. Of course
Boston may let him thrive, like with El-Amin this summer.
But ultimately they discovered that he just didn't *fit*,
even at a quarter of what a non-playmaker like Milt
Palacio earned.
