Re: Bremer makes his move

I generally agree with your points, but have two comments/questions/critiques:

1) Assuming we move up in the draft, do you have any confidence that Wallace would make the correct pick?

2) Even if Bird came here as GM for next season, do you really see him succeeding here? You have three max players - one of which is absolutely untradeable (Baker) and the other two if you do trade them set you back so far its hard to recover. You will probably have to thin the supporting cast even more over the next few years due to escalating max contracts. You have no real chance of bringing in quality free agents or players via trade (unless you trade Walker or Pierce). When the Baker deal was announced, I felt that regardless of how he played this deal was a disaster. There was no way his best days were ahead of him and with three max deals, it really leaves little margin for error. The length of the contract handicaps this team going forward. Quite simply, whether Baker was averaging 2 and 2 or 8 and 8 or even 14 and 8, it still ranks as one of the worst trades in the history of the NBA, because in this era of the salary cap it absolutely nukes this team for the forseeable future. Just as we could see the end approaching for the disaster that was Rick Pitino - this idiot Wallace leaves me wishing for Pitino deals (I cant believe I just said that). Berry, Mark S wrote:

I don't think my "negativity" is clouding my judgment on Kedrick. You want a
good comparison? Look at Rodney White. He was drafted ninth in that 2001
draft, two spots ahead of Kedrick Brown. This is after he was mentioned as
high as the No. 1 overall pick leading up to the draft. He was much more
highly regarded than Kedrick. He was a non-factor on a veteran-dominated
playoff team his rookie season in Detroit, just like Kedrick was in Boston.
In the offseason, he was traded to the Nuggets in exchange for Don Reid,
Mengke Bateer and a first round draft choice. Now, that first-round draft
choice could have some value considering it's coming from the Nuggets, but
do you think the Pistons would have taken that deal on draft night 2001? No
way. White's stock plummeted, and Kedrick's has, too. Teams pay attention.
You know what they see when they look at Kedrick? A guy who can't beat out
Eric Williams and Walter McCarty for playing time. They don't assume Obie
can't develop players-they assume that Obie plays the best players. Kedrick
isn't one of the best.

Personally, if they decide to deal Kedrick, I hope it's part of a draft day
deal with the other two draft picks to move up for someone. It's doubtful,
because those picks are going to be really low in the first round, but
that's my hope. You're not going to get much for the guy at this point.

P.S. Count me in the boat hoping against hope for a Bird return now that
things fell through in Charlotte. I was rooting for him, because he
obviously wanted it in Charlotte. But since it didn't happen, let's bring
him home to wriggle us out of this mess Wallace has gotten us into.

<He's just a rookie, and he could improve, but he has a loooong way to go to be a David Wesley, or even an Eric Strickland-the guy I've seen him most compared to in the past.>

Mark, My comparison was not a latter day Wesley comparison. When I was comparing
Wesley to Bremer, it was how Wesley was a nobody who made the team by
working hard on the defensive end, who wasn't flashy. I see all those same
things in Bremer. I am certainly not a big believer in JR. I have hopes that
he can overachieve like Wesley did. My biggest point is that Obie didn't go
back to Shammond to finish the game nor should he have. JR's defense and
energy had helped the Celts get back into the game. Shammond had been
reluctant to shoot an open ten-footer. You can't have a guy out there who
won't shoot an open ten-footer, those are too hard to develop to waste them.
The big key is if Obie goes back to JR after Delk comes back for a little
time. It will show that the tide is turning...
<The problem with trading Kedrick and the two draft picks is you're not likely to get much in return.>
I think your negativity has got the best of you here. There isn't anything
any different in Kedrick now than he was a 1.5 years ago other than he is a
little older and he understands the NBA life. He stills has the NBA body,
the great athletic ability. He is just raw. He needs to be on a team that
will play him in long stretches, like the Heat or Bulls so he can develop.
Like just about everyone else that plays with Walker or PP, you aren't going
to see the ball unless you are getting a three point attempt. That isn't the
way Kedrick can be developed, nor was it the way JJ could develop. My point
is that if you are a duck, don't try and be a goose. Our style of play won't
develop rookies, so let's trade them and get some other people who can help.
This isn't my philosophy but Obie isn't going anywhere so things aren't
going to change. Point guard and maybe a veteran scorer seems to be the
position. ...
