Lurker chiming in here. I only see the nationally televised games, but I
think I understand the 'style of play' argument.
A.I., even at 6'1", or whatever he is, attacks the basket and takes it the
rim strong. Most of Antoines shots around the basket seem to be of the cute
little flip it up from no higher than shoulder level before the defender
realizes a shot is forthcoming. He's fairly effective at it, but it's not a
strong move to the hole, and generally doesn't result in contact. Antoines
shooting form is like little kids that have only strength enough to get it to
the basket by starting the shot down around the waist and heaving it. At
shot like that requires a lot of space to be a good look. If he's not wide
open, or is unable to surprise the defender by chucking it in a hurried
fashion, he won't get a good look, and will often result in his shot being
blocked. I don't know that I've ever seen a "power forward" get so many
shots blocked
I'll give him his due... if he's got time and space to get his shot off, he's
fairly accurate, but I have to agree with Egg; his style does not lend itself
to getting calls.
FWIW, lump in PP, or Kobe, or McGrady (slashers all) with AI about the taking
it strong to the hole. They're the guys that get the calls.
And that's the view from Lurkerville.
