Let's hear it; one time for the west coast audience: "I love Waltah!"

Just remember for Walter: contract year. I have no problem with him
coming back, but I want short years and short money. Same with
Strick. We have this habit of taking care of our own better then
other people takes care of superstars and that worries me. Even with
his stellar play last night he's still a 8-12th man for most teams -
there is no reason to overpay to keep him.

No one wants to overpay for anything. Not toothpaste, not gasoline, not
ball players.
On the other hand, you mention that it's Walter's contract year. Can you
say honestly, that he's putting out more effort this season? Or, is it that
he's matured, focused his energy and has begun to understand the game
better, as well as being given some minutes down low. The only times prior
to this season that I remember seeing Walter anywhere, but out at the three
point line, or handling (oops!) the ball, at the top of the key, were at
Shaw's three summers ago, when he absolutely dominated in the paint, or when
he guarded Shaquille O'Neil (effectively) last season.
Has his burgeoning understanding of the game of basketball and his
increased ability, to harness a bit, his enthusiasm and energy, coincided
with a coach who is beginning to understand how he can help the team best?
You say he's no better than "a 8-12 man." There's a big difference between
an 8th man, who will get 20-25 minutes a game and a 12th, who probably won't
play at all. If he keeps rebounding, he'll get all of 20 minutes and if he
can keep hitting shots; perhaps, even a starting spot. "You can't keep a
good man down."
