Hi Bill:
FWIW, I listened on the Audio League Pass. The time zone makes it really
tough, but the Audio Pass also lets you tune in again to the entire
broadcast later on. I really disliked the color commentator guy they fired
this summer. He didn't do a lick of research or know the game, he didn't
sound local (a key for me) and he had a smugness in his voice. The new guy
is excellent (and witty too) and Maxwell is also noticeably more polished
(and witty). I enjoy listening to games on the radio again.
Its too early to suggest he was a flash-in-the-pan, but Jamal Tinsley is
clearly struggling. Meanwhile Tony Parker is improving game by game at the
moment. He's scored over 18 ppg over the past three games, with 17 assists
and 5 turnovers. By contrast, Joe Forte and Kedrick Brown have played a
grand total of 25 minutes this season, which works out to around 3.5
minutes per game between them.
I'm pointing this out to you because the Celtics bench is averaging only 15
ppg since Joe Johnson entered the starting lineup. Strickland (10 points
against the Wiz) is the only bench player to reach double figures during
that span. How bad would it be if Obie gave our rookies some minutes?
The "problem" is that these minutes will have to come at the expense of
Strickland (16.4 mpg) and Williams (24 mpg). We can't just go blaming it on
Waltah, who has gotten all of 36 minutes in 7 games.
Walker and Pierce sit for a combined 13 minutes per game, so there just
aren't that minutes to go around.
Joe
On the subject of my watching more games, I've been urged to accept a
posting back to UN Headquarters in NYC. Its tempting, because its a
promotion and its the same time zone as the Boston Celtics. But I've got a
mortgage, my son is pre-enrolled in school and has an excellent nanny etc.
Plus there seems to be a giant bullseye painted on the UN headquarters
building right now...a terror attack would be like "one stop shopping" for
both bin Laden and all the American "black helicopter" yahoos. I think I'll
go. I'm leaning that way. The basketball coverage over here really stinks
(one NBA game per week) and my wife and I love the Apple. Do any of you
guys live there? I'd like to meet some of you.
