Not to my knowledge, even using anabolic steroids, even with beginning lifters.
For a lean college athlete who's presumably been exposed to weight training
before, not a chance. If the 25lb gain is not an outright exaggeration, what
probably happened is the athlete gained quite a bit of fat along with the
muscle/connective tissue. Unless one is an extreme (and obese) novice, adding
muscle mass without adding fat is virtually impossible, as building muscle
requires one to have a positive energy balance (consume more calories than the
body needs for maintenance), and you can't have it so that the extra calories
go only into building muscle and not into storage, i.e., fat. In bodybuilding,
where the explicit objective is to maximize muscle mass while minimizing fat,
bodybuilders employ 'mass-building' stages (early in the training cycle) and
then 'shredding' stages, in which they lose the fat they've gained in the
'mass-building' stage while trying to preserve as much of the muscle they've
gained as possible. Oh well, that's more info than you asked for.
