Griffin doesn't have Bird rights, nor does he have a 'roster spot' with the
Celtics that can be 'preserved'. He's a free agent, or was before he
reportedly signed with the Mavs. That means he no more has a roster spot on
the Celtics than you or I. I don't see what's so difficult to understand
about this.

While I'm sorry to see him go, when time came to re-sign Griffin, what
Wallace & Co. probably remembered most from his performance was his
outright refusal to shoot the ball while Walker & Pierce were being double-
and triple-teamed and the offense was grinding to a halt. Their draft picks
indicate that they wanted to avoid these painful experiences in the future.
While I'm sure the Celtics brass appreciates Griffin's non-scoring
abilities, the truth of the matter is that, 1) it's easier to teach an
offensively and physically talented player to rebound and play D than it is
to teach a pedestrian defensive specialist offensive skills; 2) if it
weren't for the dead weight with guaranteed contracts on our roster, they
probably would've kept him nonetheless. We can essentially thank Uncle Rick
for losing yet another valuable, if limited, player.
