Latest USA Update

Hi Everyone,
Just another weekly update to say things are going fine over here. The only bad thing last week was the people who live above us had some friends stay over, and these friends had a young child, who liked running around. As you can hear the footsteps of anyone who walks heavily in the apartment above us there was a continual booming noise coming down to us thanks to this kid. At one stage we're sure the kid was running around in circles just yelling out as kids do. Overall pretty annoying. Thank goodness they're not there all the time.

We're starting to get towards the end of the differences between Australia and the US (or at least those that Pen and I have seen) but it's bound to happen some day. So while we've still got them here's another lot of differences.

Television Ads. These are a bit weird. If they are advertising any sort of medicine, then the ad at the end states all of the possible side effects of the medicine. Ie. "Buy this great headache tablet it's fantastic removes your headache within one minute. May cause nausea, stomach cramps, and internal bleeding." After that sort warning there's no way I'd be buying the tablets.

Lawyers. I now understand where the big stigma of Lawyers = money grabbing comes from. In the USA you have ads that go like this. "Have you been injured in an accident? If you have call us and we will get You, the MONEY You deserve. That's right, get the MONEY You deserve. Call us now."

Haircuts. Interestingly enough when getting a hair cut you don't actually get to look at yourself in the mirror. They face you out into the room and just start cutting away.

Vacuum Cleaners. 95% of Vacuum Cleaners are uprights. Almost no vacuum cleaners are the small type that you drag along on the floor. I think it's pretty much 50/50 in Australia.

Elevators. There is no ground floor in elevators. The ground floor is Level 1 and everything just goes up from there.

To get "The Australian" Newspaper in Atlanta, it costs $11.00 US. The added bonus to this is that paper is one week out of date. Thank God for the Internet.

Licence Plates. Licence plates in America are called "Tags". Each tag is owned by the individual and not the car. So if you sell a car the tag doesn't go with it. Additionally Tags are only shown on the rear of the car. It means we can now get an Australian Flag to place on the front of our car.

It's a bit of a shorter mail this time but that's the way things go. Hope you're all well.

Cheers

Dave
