And from the Toronto Star:
Vince Carter confirmed today he has agreed to a six-year contract extension
with the Toronto Raptors, saying the city felt like home. Carter's extension
is the maximum allowed under NBA rules and could be worth as much as $94
million (U.S.). With one year left on his existing deal, the extension should
keep him in Toronto until he is 31.

44. Can existing contracts be extended?
. . . None of this applies to rookie "scale" contracts signed by first round
draft picks. These contracts may be extended from August 1 to October 31 (
which is why Pierce and Carter had to wait until today to "officially"
announce their deals) of the player's fourth (option) season. The salary in
the first year of the extension is limited only by the maximum salary, and
raises are limited to 12.5% of the salary in the first season of the
extension. Rookie "scale" contracts cannot be extended unless the team picks
up the player's option for the fourth season.
