Re: Predictions winners
Wish I had your faith :)
Interestingly enough, I was reading the
comments of Seattle GM Wally Walker today and he is willing to do whatever it
takes this off-season to improve his team, including trading Gary Payton if need
be, simply because Seattle failed to qualify for the playoffs. Their record was
over .500 (44-38) and this year is only the second time they've missed the
playoffs in three seasons (The C's have not made the playoffs since 1995).
Specific comments from the ESPN
article: "We didn't make the playoffs. We've
got to look at everything," Walker said. "We're
all keenly disappointed that we're not playing currently. We're not in the
playoffs now so we're not good enough." This definitely also applies to the
C's.
A few seasons back, Wally Walker had a
Seattle team that was the best team in the NBA that didn't have MJ on it's
roster. They came up 2 games short of the promised-land, so I don't take his
comments lightly.
This is a simple statement but also
applies to the C's. The team is simply not good enough. The East this season
required a sub-.500 record to quality for the playoffs and we even fell short of
that mark. To aquire the good player (3rd option) you
mentioned through free agency requires cap space. Something we don't have.
You aren't going to land an all-star for the exception slot either. That doesn't
leave us with a lot of options other than to either trade players/picks, or
draft incredibly well.
If this team stands pat, I don't forsee
a much better season next year. The other teams in the East won't be getting any
worse either. Hate to be the voice o' doom & gloom constantly, but the
Celtics have sucked for a long time now, and I don't like it one
bit.
Just my £0.02...

I don't think a major shakeup in organization or personnel helps
anybody. It just sends the team back to the drawing board. IMO this season
will benefit both Walker and Pierce immensely because for the first time they
don't have to worry about getting traded and can work to improve there game.
For the same reason, our draft will also be better because it
won't be to fill an immediate need. Now if we could just get one good player
through free agency as a 3rd scorer we will be all set. - Mishra

One of the rare times I can say I'm not happy to be correct
:)
Unfortunately, because of several reasons (Walker, the cap,
lower-lottery
picks, Gaston) I don't see a remarked improvement next year
unless a major
shakeup in the organisational structure and team personnel
occurs. Once
again, I hope to be proven
wrong....
