Celtics outmanned, outgunned by Philly 85-83
This was a heartbreaker, with Celtics mistakes compounded by the
difficulty of playing against eight people on the floor.
Apparently, Antoine Walker drove to the hoop, got aggressively defended,
but was almost never fouled. It looked to me like a Celtic player
had to be laid out on the floor before the refs reluctantly blew a
whistle. Conversely, it seems that when a Celtic defender stands
somewhere in the vicinity of the man with the ball, that's now a
foul.
Not to say the C's were playing as well as they ought--on those rare
occasions when they did get to the line, it had been so long since
the last trip, they forgot how to make the shot. They also need to
work on not taking so long to pass the ball. Everyone in the
building knows where the ball's going to go long before it leaves the
passer's hands. That makes it very easy to set the defense.
Despite this, the Good Guys actually had a lead through the first half,
and kept close in the third quarter. Then they self-destructed,
with a lot of help from those three guys on Philly's side. A fierce
flurry in the last minute made it close--in fact, gave the C's a good
chance to win. But another set of non-calls and there went the
game.
To quote the late great Johnny Most, "WE WERE MUGGED!"
Rats. Ah, well, onward to the next game, Wednesday against the
Washington Wizards. Let's hope they only put five guys on the
floor, or it's gonna ba another long night.
