I found this article on the Providence Journal web site. Evidently Herren's
ankle injury is still bothering him. And is he on some sort of liquid diet or
something? It says he lost 12 pounds in a little over two weeks since the
trade
was consummated, with 15 more to go. Although 2 1/2 hours of cardio work in
addition to regular practice is a pretty active workload. It seems like there
would be a danger of muscle loss as Kestas has mentioned though.

Herren's problems leave him sidelined

BOSTON -- Chris Herren's ankle injury continues to give the Fall River native
trouble.

The former Durfee High School star, acquired Oct. 16 from the Denver Nuggets
with swingman Bryant Stith for swingman Calbert Cheaney and guard Robert
Pack ,
said:

"It's still sore. It's still tough to go left to right.

"It's a little frustrating. You always want to be out there on opening night.
It's a special night, but your health comes first. And when I come back, I
expect to be 100 percent and ready to go."

Herren, who missed the last three preseason games after suffering the injury
against the Wizards, has been making good use of his time off the court,
though, as he continues to try to lose weight, as ordered by coach Rick
Pitino .

When the 6-foot-2 guard arrived in Boston last month weighing 212 pounds,
Pitino told Herren he wanted him to get down to 185. He's already lost
about 12
pounds.

On top of practice and other scheduled team workouts, Herren says he has been
doing 2-21/2 hours of cardiovascular workouts.

"I was a little overweight coming in because I had nothing to do. I wasn't
involved in training camp, and I was pretty stale for a while," said Herren,
who says he hasn't been under 200 pounds since his junior year in high school.
"But Coach Pitino has a different style, a different philosophy than a lot of
coaches. Speed is the focus. So, I looked at it as a challenge. I looked at it
as a lot of fun to be able to get down to a 185 pounds and see how my body
will
react and see how my game will change."
