May on Dooling & Bird Buying The C's

Peter May said another GM thinks the C's have the Jones
for Keyon Dooling, but as May points out, the C's
have Kenny Anderson for three more years...

May on Bird:

... Larry Bird is going to wait for a couple of months to see what
happens with his bid to buy the Celtics. That's why he didn't stay in
Indiana. There's also another reason: Bird wants to be the man in
control, and that would not be the case in Indy. While he gets along
with Donnie Walsh, there are two owners he'd have to answer to, and that
would not be the case if he was fronting an ownership group in Boston.
He would be the man. Bird, as he told the Globe last February, has
people lined up to make a serious run at the team; one figure being
mentioned recently is $400 million. Bird apparently has one, very rich
individual on the West Coast who could do a Mark Cuban and simply write
a check. And what of Rick Pitino? Well, his buyout figure would be taken
care of by the seller, not the buyer. All of this is moot, of course, if
Gaston is determined to hold on to the team. But just in case you may
have forgotten, Gaston took over the controls prior to the start of the
1993-94 season. That was the last time the Celtics and the Lakers were
equals.
