Possible reasoning for taking Williams:

I couldn't believe it at first. I believe Pitino had better offers on the 
table. However, I think Pitino comes to a conclusion about a player. Then, if 
a trade is to be made, he will react on it regardless of value. Case in the 
point, the first Erik Williams trade. Pitino wanted to get rid of Williams so 
he could sign Mills. So instead of attempting to get value, he dumped 
Williams for nothing who was actually worth something at the time. Like 
Toronto says, you can also use a banger/rebounder. Now I agree on trading 
Fortson. But I would think you would trade for equal value. Fortson is worth 
much more than A Williams. Just let him go be a free agent and leave is your 
are going to get nothing for him. But I guess Pitino has a plan.

Williams has shown an excellent ability to blow by opposing point guards. 
However, he is streaky offensively and he isn't much of a passer, something 
you really need in a point guard. 

But this is why Pitino took Williams. Williams is 6'5'', has long arms and 
quick hands. To make the press work, it all starts at the point guard 
position. The point guard must be able to put extreme pressure on the 
opposing point guard. Now, Williams is no defensive demon. But he does have 
the physical tools. I think Pitino always sees people in the framework of 
what he loves, the press. Barros is weak defensively, not only in the press 
but also one-on-one. So Pitino took lesser value to get the player he thinks 
can be his defensive point guard. It is the only thing I can figure. Other 
than a veteran inside scorer in the second unit, or greatest need was backup 
point guard. I just thought this person would be a speedburner passer type 
who could get this team to run and fastbreak, something a finesse team should 
be doing all the time. But Pitino went a  backup point who he thinks he can 
build to further implement the press. If I am wrong, he is just a bad trade...
