Deep pockets
Portland has the NBA's deepest team. It's no coincidence Blazers owner
Paul Allen has deep pockets.
Portland has shelled out an NBA-record $74 million in player salaries
this season. That's $40 million over the salary cap.
Pitino said only a handful of NBA teams -- New York, Portland,
Philadelphia and the Lakers among them -- can afford to build themselves
into title contenders through free agency.
“The Celtics have no chance to do it that way. We don't have that type
of money,” Pitino said.
That doesn't mean the Celtics can't be a title contender,
however.
“You have to do it through the draft with smart decisions and
you have to do it other ways,” Pitino said. “You don't cry about the way
you can't have it. When you're at Providence, you're not jealous of
Kentucky or North Carolina. You just get it down your way, a different
way. There are many different ways to do things.”
