Walker, all hip, no hop
I have been please with AW's progress this past month or so. He has shown
a willingness to:
- get on the post
- pass when double-teamed
- rebound (some)
- play some D
- great attitude (I have always like this kids attitude)
I really believe the next step for him (assuming the above continues to
improve) is to work on jumping. Can you imagine how unstoppable this guy
could be if he jump over defenders? Here is an example of the problem: AW
is developing a sort of trademark move on the low post. He sets up with
his back to the basket (on the right side of the rim), sort of throws the
ball down (not really a dribble), spins to his right (under the backboard)
picks up the ball and puts it off the glass. He is one of the few 6'9"
guys who is quick enough to do this. The problem is that defenders have
now seen it enough to know how to defend it. They back up a little and
give him the spin, then block the shot. It would be great if that move
ended in a thunderous dunk.
Any of you folks knowledgeable about weight training as it relates to
jumping? Can a person significantly be trained/taught to jump higher?
