Celtics Trade Rumor Du Jour: Othella Harrington

Put your skepticals on when reading this, because you never
know, but the latest Celtics trade rumor has them sending Calbert
Cheaney and the recently acquired Utah pick to the Vancouver
Grizzlies for Othella Harrington. It's a deal that seems sensible
for both teams, as Boston no longer needs Cheaney with the
acquisition of Carr but does need another rebounder with the
loss of Fortson, and Vancouver has been trying to dump
a disgruntled Harrington all summer. And it actually works
salary cap wise. Cheaney by my calculations is scheduled
to make $2.2 million during the upcoming season and
Harrington -- signed till 2005 with a 7 year - $17 million
contract -- is around the $2.3 million mark. (And thanks
to Patricia the Salary Cap Goddess for providing the
figures.)

Addendum: There is one teeny-weeny thing that could derail this
deal, besides the fact that it's probably your typical half-baked
rumor, and that's Harrington's BYC. If Vancouver is at the cap or
over it, Harrington's BYC only allows them to take back 75 percent of
his salary or $1.725 million, which does not fall within the allowed
15 percent range of Cheaney's $2.2 million salary.
