If the Orlando Magic move forward with the plan to make Doc Rivers their next
head coach, it will speak volumes about upcoming roster moves. There will be
plenty.

If, on the other hand, the Magic shift their direction and select Bob Hill,
the roster may not look that different from last season.

Hill would be hired to massage what the Magic already have. Rivers would be
hired to rebuild.

The Magic just aren't deciding upon a new coach, but they are deciding on
which direction this franchise will go.

It's no secret the majority of the players on the current roster would like
to see Hill get the job. It's more than just Hill being a former assistant
here. Rivers represents the unknown.

If Rivers is hired, it likely means that either veteran forward Horace Grant
or guard Nick Anderson would be traded. It would mean that the Magic will
move forward with a sign-and-trade deal involving free agent Penny Hardaway.

It would mean a restart, moving high into the upcoming draft with a trade of
a veteran or two. It's hard to imagine a mostly veteran roster such as the
Magic being happy to live through the growing pains of a new coach.

Rivers, 37, would be the second-youngest head coach in the league behind only
New York's Jeff Van Gundy. Although he is considered one of the brightest
young faces moving into the coaching profession, he would put a different
stamp on this team than Hill.

Rivers will be hired to grow with a new roster. Hill will be hired to make it
work with the way it is now.
