Celtic Interest In Derek Battie? McDonough on Reggie Lewis
Boston Herald - 5/8/99

Brothers in arms
Among those taking advantage of
the chance to work with the
coaches was Derek Battie, older
brother of Tony Battie and a
candidate for the Celts, as well.
Both Batties will remain in town
most of the summer, with Derek
rehabbing an ankle injury and
planning to play for the Celtics
in at least one of their summer
league appearances (in Los Angeles
or the one the club will host at
UMass-Boston).
Derek, at 6-foot-9 and 250 pounds,
is stockier than his brother and
has been in a few camps before
heading overseas. The Temple
product first caught the eye of
Celtic general manager Chris
Wallace in the Heat summer camp in
1996.
Lotto fever
The NBA Board of Governors broke
several draft order ties
yesterday.
In the only draft lottery
tiebreaker, the Celtics defeated
Dallas. The C's will have 37
chances out of 1,000 to get the
first overall pick, while the Suns
- who own Dallas' pick - will have
36 chances. If neither team wins
one of the top three picks,
Phoenix will have the next pick
after the Celtics.
Cleveland has an option to acquire
the Celtics' top pick in one of
the next three drafts (from the
Vitaly Potapenko trade) as long as
it's not a top three pick.

Let me see if I understand this. The Dream
Team of doctors that was called in to try
to help Reggie Lewis when he first
collapsed was no good, so Donna
Harris-Lewis pulled him out of New England
Baptist Hospital. Then the next set of
doctors at Brigham and Women's Hospital
was no good, so she is suing them. What
should be remembered is the Dream Team was
made up of the top cardiologists from
practically all of the top hospitals
around the city, not just New England
Baptist. Dr. Arnold Scheller, who
testified on behalf of Lewis (and the
Celtics) this week, is an orthopedic
doctor, not a cardiologist. One item in
Scheller's testimony I found particularly
interesting was that he said he told Lewis
he was going to test him for cocaine the
next day, and at midnight that night,
Donna moved him to Brigham and Women's ...
