Big predictions for a small season

Rookie of the year
Paul Pierce. The Celtics are a dangerous team, and it was crazy that he
slipped to 10th in the draft. He's a wonderful talent and is a bookend with
Ron Mercer, loaded with skills and the chip on his shoulder to prove everybody
wrong.

Coach of the year
Rick Pitino. The East Coast media machine will make sure Ricky P. gets plenty
of notice for the way the Celtics take advantage of their youth and
athleticism. But there also will be a lot of sentiment for ingratiating George
Karl, who probably will coach the Bucks back into the playoffs for the first
time since 1991.
