DENVER, AUGUST 3, 1999 =97 The Denver Nuggets have acquired G/F Ron =
Mercer, F
Ronald "Popeye" Jones and C Dwayne Schintzius from the Boston Celtics =
in
exchange for F Danny Fortson, F Eric Williams, G Eric Washington and a
future draft choice, Nuggets Vice President and General Manager Dan =
Issel
announced today.

Mercer, 6-7, 210, appeared in 41 games for the Celtics last season,
averaging 17.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.5 apg and 1.63 spg in 37.8 minutes - all
career highs. He ranked second on the team in both scoring and steals =
and
scored a career-high 35 points against the Nuggets on March 5. =
Originally
the sixth overall selection in the 1997 NBA Draft, Mercer averaged 15.3 =
ppg,
3.5 rpg, 2.2 apg and 1.56 spg in 33.3 minutes for the Celtics as a =
rookie.
For his efforts, he was named to the NBA's All-Rookie First Team. =
Mercer
helped lead the University of Kentucky to the Final Four in both his =
seasons
at UK, including their National Championship season of 1996.

The 6-8, 250, Jones is a six-year NBA veteran joining his fourth club. =
He
played in 18 games for the Celtics last season, averaging 3.0 ppg and =
2.9
rpg before undergoing season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his left =
knee on
March 31. He appeared in just 14 games in 1997-98 with the Toronto =
Raptors
before tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Nov. =
30.
He was traded to the Celtics on Feb. 18, 1998, but did not appear in =
any
games for Boston that season. Jones played his first three NBA =
campaigns in
Dallas, where he averaged 9.0 ppg and 9.5 rpg in 229 games from =
1993-96. He
was originally a second-round pick (41st overall) by the Houston =
Rockets in
the 1992 NBA Draft and spent the '92-93 season with Teorematour Milan =
of the
Italian League.

Schintzius, 7-2, 285, is an eight-year NBA veteran. He appeared in 16 =
games
for Boston last season, averaging 0.7 ppg and 1.2 rpg. He missed 12 =
games
while on the injured list with a sore right knee and three due to a =
death in
the family. He has averaged 2.7 ppg and 2.5 rpg over his 217-game NBA =
career
spent with San Antonio, Sacramento, New Jersey, Indiana, the L.A. =
Clippers
and Celtics. He sat out the 1997-98 season due to an ankle injury.
Schintzius was originally drafted by the Spurs in the first round (24th
overall) of the 1990 NBA Draft.

Fortson, 6-7, 260, enjoyed a breakout year with the Nuggets last =
season,
averaging 11.0 ppg and a team-high 11.6 rpg - good for fourth in the =
NBA. He
appeared in all 50 games, including 38 starts at center. As a rookie in
1997-98, he averaged 10.2 ppg and 5.6 rpg in 80 games. Fortson, the =
10th
overall selection of the 1997 NBA Draft by Milwaukee, was acquired by =
Denver
on June 25, 1997, along with Johnny Newman and Joe Wolf in exchange for
Ervin Johnson.

After two seasons in Denver, Williams, 6-8, 220, returns to the team =
with
whom he began his NBA career. He averaged 7.3 ppg and 2.1 rpg in 38 =
games
for the Nuggets last season. He averaged 19.8 ppg and 5.3 rpg in four =
games
for Denver in '97-98 before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament =
in
his right knee on Nov. 7, which cost him the remainder of the season. =
He was
acquired by the Nuggets from Boston on Aug. 21, 1997 in exchange for =
two
second-round draft choices.

Washington, 6-4, 190, played two seasons in Denver, averaging 6.9 ppg =
and
2.1 rpg in 104 games. He averaged 5.4 ppg and 2.3 rpg in 38 contests =
last
season. He was acquired by the Nuggets from the Orlando Magic, along =
with
Orlando's 1999 second-round draft choice, in exchange for Jason Lawson =
on
June 25, 1997.
