Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Knight's contract was 
$22 million over 7 years, or about $3 million per year, with 
an option (Travis' option) to end the contract after 3 years. 

Perhaps you're thinking of Knight's option out after 3 years 
and coming up with 22/3 = 7+.  Pitino may have made a mistake 
and taken a big gamble on Knight, but he wouldn't have taken 
such an insane gamble as paying Knight $7 mill a year.
